The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has with immediate effect suspended all campaign activities for the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity in Kaputa Constituency, citing the party’s involvement in acts of violence that resulted in the death of a member of another political party.

The indefinite suspension, announced Friday, July 3, 2026, follows what the Commission called “decisive action” and will remain in place pending a full review. Kaputa Constituency is in Kaputa District.

In a statement issued in Lusaka, ECZ Chief Electoral Officer, Brown Kasaro, said the Commission was taking the step to address violence linked to the NRPUP in the area.

Kasaro also flagged a separate fatal incident in Chivuna Village, Magoye East Constituency of Mazabuka District, which resulted in the death of Stanley Sakala.

He said the Commission was awaiting a conclusive report from the Zambia Police Service before appropriate action can be taken.

“The Commission notes with deep concern the emerging pockets of electoral and political violence in selected parts of the country,” Kasaro stated.

He urged all participating political parties and independent candidates to maintain law and order and strictly abide by the Electoral Code of Conduct during all campaign activities.

Kasaro warned that any failure to adhere to the law would result in serious consequences.

“As the Commission, we will not hesitate to enforce its statutory powers under the Electoral Process (Amendment) Act No. 12 of 2026,” he warned.
