Former Mines Minister, Paul Kabuswe, and former Copperbelt Province Minister, Elisha Matambo, have dismissed as false social media claims linking them to an alleged copper theft syndicate following the arrest of former Copperbelt Police Commissioner, Mwala Yuyi and six others.
The rumours emerged after police arrested Yuyi, a magistrate and several other suspects over the alleged theft of copper cathodes recovered in Mufulira, a case that has attracted national attention.
In a Facebook post, Kabuswe denied reports that he had been arrested, saying he was in Lusaka at the time the claims were circulating.
“I am in Lusaka reading fake news that I have been arrested in Mufulira. Don’t mind them, tabakwetefye manifesto (they have no manifesto). HH nafuti nafuti,” Kabuswe wrote.
Matambo also dismissed the allegations, describing them as politically motivated propaganda.
“It is now clear that our enemies have run out of what to tell the people,” he said in a separate statement.
He said he was campaigning for President Hakainde Hichilema and UPND candidates in Lufwanyama East Constituency when the rumours surfaced claiming he had been taken into police custody.
“It is laughable,” Matambo said.
He urged supporters to ignore what he described as fake news and remain focused on the election campaign.
“We remain focused and will meet them at the ballot box in less than 13 days,” he said.
The denials followed the Zambia Police Service’s confirmation that former Copperbelt Police Commissioner Mwala Yuyi, independent Chimwemwe parliamentary candidate Makina and several other individuals had been arrested and charged in connection with the alleged theft of 436 copper cathodes valued at about US$448,596.
