Social Media Trends: Netizens turn to ‘bombs’ and ‘missiles’ as ECZ Presidential results keep rolling in

As the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) continued announcing presidential election results, social media users transformed the tense vote tally into a comedy show, using military-style language to describe the growing margins on the scoreboard.

Across Facebook, netizens likened the incoming results to everything from ballistic missiles and hypersonic rockets to atomic bombs and volcanic eruptions, joking that each new constituency result landed with devastating force.

One user, Kakumba Teresai, humorously dubbed the results “the Russian Raduga R-97 bomb,” while Bright Múkümâ described them as “a very dangerous atomic bomb made of eggs mixed with beans,” prompting another commenter to jokingly add that soya pieces had been forgotten from the recipe.

Tomlee MMG said people were finally understanding why parents always asked whether someone had eaten beans before sleeping, implying the election results were causing explosive reactions.

Others kept the military metaphors flowing. Bethel Malambo joked that “missiles went straight into the lamp,” while Gift Nawah declared that “the hypersonic missile hit the target accurately.”

Lany Michelo simply called it a “ballistic missile,” as Steven Chile claimed some provinces were experiencing “anti-ballistic missile” strikes from the overwhelming results.

The humour extended beyond weapons. Hawa Camara likened the announcements to a volcano erupting, while Florence Tasheni Mumba wondered whether what people were witnessing was “an explosive bomb.”

Some users compared the unfolding results to scenes from blockbuster films.

Makhaza Kabz likened the vote count to “Avengers: Doomsday,” while Coxy Kaluba joked that the latest figures were enough to “end World War II.”

Others focused on the entertainment value of following the election online.

Ettie Bornwell quipped that reading Facebook comments had become more enjoyable than watching the official announcements on television.

Meanwhile, Alec Pharaoh M’denda joked that he could almost hear the sound of the imaginary missile strikes, while Fredrick Mutanti asked which “missile” had just landed after waking from a nap.

Although the comments were filled with exaggerated references to bombs, missiles and explosions, they reflected the light-hearted mood many Zambians adopted online as they closely followed the ECZ’s gradual release of presidential election results.
