‘I’m not the opposition to Hichilema but the people of Zambia,’ Mundubile vows to pursue victory claims in court

Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has vowed to challenge President Hakainde Hichilema’s re-election in court, insisting his fight is for the people of Zambia and not against an individual.

The Alliance said on Wednesday it would seek legal redress to contest the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government results from the August 13, 2026 General Elections, despite its special purpose vehicle, the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP), having conceded defeat.

In an official statement signed by Spokesperson, Emmanuel Mwamba, the Alliance reaffirmed the position earlier issued by Mundubile and his running mate, Makebi Zulu.

Mwamb explained that for the 2026 elections the Tonse Alliance adopted NRPUP as a special purpose vehicle, while the Pamodzi Alliance used the Resolute Party.

“The statement expressed the commitment that as a contending ticket in the 2026 Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections, they would seek legal redress to challenge the disputed results of the 2026 Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government,” he said.

Mwamba listed several alleged irregularities, including ballot security violations, ballot stuffing, improper transportation and handling of electoral materials, and discrepancies between polling station figures and the results announced by the national totalling centre led by Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis.

The Alliance through Mwamba also raised concern over the role of the military during the process.

“Other matters of concern regard the presence and active role of the military who facilitated the raid and invasion of Totalling Centres where key audit documents were confiscated and election results were altered,” he stated.

Mwamba cited the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG), to which Zambia is a signatory, noting that the African Union opposes military intervention in democratic governance.

“These facts have also been recorded, established and reported by all local and international monitors and observers as released in their preliminary reports,” he said.

The Alliance through Mwamba accused the state of targeting leaders of these entities, describing it as “an immoral and dastard attack against democracy and the multi-party character of our country.”

He stated that failure to challenge the results would amount to a betrayal of voters.

“It will therefore be betrayal for Hon. Brian Mundubile who is carrying the aspirations and hopes of millions of Zambians who voted for him overwhelmingly not to pursue justice using constitutional means, in which we must demonstrate that the election and expressed Will of Zambians have been stolen and violated,” Mwamba said.

The Alliance further condemned what it termed “heightened and continued harassment, beatings, detention, arrests and raids against our key officials,” saying the actions were aimed at preventing the petition and the organization of witnesses and documents.

Mwamba called on the Alliance members to remain strong and steadfast during the trying times and thanked Zambians for supporting Mundubile and Zulu as stewards for their hopes and aspirations.

The announcement comes amid competing positions within the opposition, with NRPUP President Ezra Tembo accepting the ECZ results and pledging that his party would serve as the official opposition in Parliament.

The ECZ declared President Hichilema and the UPND winners of the August 13 polls.
