Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance leader, Brian Mundubile, has called for an independent, transparent and credible investigation into the death of former Minister of Transport and Communications, Mutotwe Kafwaya.

Inspector General of Police, Graphel Musamba confirmed that Kafwaya was the unidentified man who was killed during a reported intelligence-led joint operation in Kabulonga on August 14, 2026 and died at the hospital upon arrival.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, Mundubile described Kafwaya as his friend, brother and colleague, and conveyed his condolences to the wife, children and the wider family.

“Hon. Kafwaya served as Member of Parliament for Lunte from 2016 to 2021 and also served in Cabinet as Minister of Works and Supply and later as Minister of Transport and Communications,” he said.

Mundubile questioned the circumstances surrounding Kafwaya’s death, particularly the delay in officially confirming his identity by the Zambian authorities.

“The Central Joint Operations Committee, Service Chiefs and other security authorities took five days to confirm Hon. Kafwaya’s death, despite repeated inquiries from his family, colleagues, lawyers and other concerned Zambians,” he said .

Similary, Citizens First President Harry Kalaba called for the matter to be reported to the International Criminal Court, stating that international institutions should provide support to the family in its pursuit of justice.

Kalaba further urged regional and international bodies to take an interest in the case and support efforts aimed at transparency, accountability and respect for the rule of law.

“It is with profound sadness that I address you following the tragic passing of Hon. Mutotwe Kafwaya. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all Zambians mourning this loss,” he said.

Kalaba stated that the circumstances surrounding his passing had raised serious questions and concerns across the nation especially at a time when citizens deserved clarity, transparency, and reassurance.

He emphasized that it was important that the facts were established and communicated openly.

“We therefore call upon the relevant authorities to provide a clear, transparent, and independent account of the events surrounding his passing, including who authorized the operation, what rules of engagement were applied, why was lethal force used and why was the nation deliberately misled in the immediate aftermath,” Kalaba said.

Meanwhile, Socialist Party leader Dr. Fred M’membe said the killing of Kafwaya was very frightening, saddening, and annoying.

M’membe stated that the news of his death had sent a cold chill down people’s spines and had deeply moved the leadership of the Socialist Party.

“We send special condolences to his widow, children, family, and friends. We also pay special tribute to his memory. Unfortunately, the growing and unbridled political divisions and intolerance in our country’s politics have led to this bloody drama,” he said.

M’membe said no doctrine, no election dispute, no principle, or proclaimed political position, and division in the nation can justify atrocious acts such as the physical elimination of Kafwaya and any other citizen who might have died with him.

“No crime can be committed in the name of elections or law enforcement. Let a sense of sobriety, humanity and justice prevail in our hearts and in our homeland. May Kafwaya’s soul rest in eternal peace,” he said.
