Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer, Rae Hamoonga, said the incident reportedly occurred on October 7, 2026, according to an account given by the victim’s mother.

In a statement issued on Friday, Hamoonga said the suspect allegedly took the woman into a bedroom and sexually abused her before neighbours intervened after hearing her scream for help.

“I would like to inform the public that the suspect allegedly took the woman into a bedroom and sexually abused her before neighbours intervened after hearing her scream for help,” he said.

Hamoonga said the victim, who complained of pain, was taken to Kitwe Teaching Hospital for medical examination.

He identified the suspect as Mathews Luhanga, a shoe repairer of Chipata Compound, who is currently in police custody as investigations continue.

Hamoonga urged members of the public to report suspected cases of sexual abuse, particularly those involving vulnerable persons.

“Members of the public should make it a habit to report suspected cases of sexual abuse, particularly those involving vulnerable persons,” he said.
