The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has warned traders against illegally importing and selling used textile products containing undergarments and nightwear, citing potential health risks to consumers.

ZCSA Manager for Communications and Public Relations, Brian Hatyoka, said the seizure of 34 bales of used underwear valued at K37,350 in Lusaka last week was part of ongoing enforcement efforts to protect public health.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, Hatyoka said the operation followed a tip-off from whistleblowers that a shop in Lusaka was selling used undergarments in violation of Zambian Standard (ZS) 559: Inspection and Acceptance Criteria for Used Textile Products.

He said the affected shop had been directed to meet the cost of disposing of the seized consignment.

Hatyoka urged consumers to remain vigilant and report the sale of banned products to the nearest ZCSA office, emphasising the importance of purchasing new undergarments and nightwear.

“ZS 559 and Statutory Instrument No. 120 of 2006 prohibits the importation and sale of used textile products containing undergarments and nightwear, a standard declared compulsory to protect consumer health,” Hatyoka stated.

He warned that used textile products worn in close contact with the skin could expose consumers to health risks, including skin rashes and fungal infections.

Hatyoka said ZCSA, as an enforcer of compulsory standards, remained committed to protecting consumers from potential health risks associated with non-compliant products.

Meanwhile, the Agency has urged pupils to consume safe products and purchase from trusted sources to safeguard their health and safety.

The Agency noted that learners consumed a wide range of products daily, including food and beverages, making consumer awareness important.

The remarks were made during a presentation to pupils and teachers at Kasisi Girls Secondary School at the institution’s Annual Awards Giving Ceremony for best-performing pupils.
