The Zambia Police Service has arrested and charged Newton Kasonso, 49, with three offences under the Cyber Crimes Act and the Penal Code.
Police Spokesperson. Chipo Kaitisha, said the charges were use of a computer system for the commission of an offence, use of insulting language and seditious practices.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, Kaitisha said the offences were contrary to Section 20 of the Cyber Crimes Act No. 4 of 2025 and sections 178, 57(1) and 60(1)(e) of the Penal Code.
She said investigations followed alleged seditious statements made by Kasonso on a social media platform on August 18, 2026.
“Following the incident, the Zambia Police Service instituted investigations into the matter,” Kaitisha said.
Kasonso remains in police custody awaiting court appearance.
Kaitisha said Kasonso was detained on October 27, 2026, upon his arrival in Zambia in connection with the investigations arising from the August incident.
She emphasised that his detention was unrelated to the collection, transportation or possession of the remains of his late brother, Dr Jones Kasonso.
“The Service wishes to emphasise that Kasonso detention relates exclusively to the alleged offences under investigation and has no connection whatsoever to the collection, transportation or possession of his late brother remains,” she said.
Kaitisha said that before his detention, Kasonso’s personal belongings and documents, together with a bag containing his late brother’s ashes, had already been handed over to the family.
She reiterated that the detention had no connection to the remains.
“The Zambia Police Service wishes to assure members of the public that it remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all matters brought to its attention are handled professionally, impartially and in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Zambia,” Kaitisha said.
