Business community demands government response, as Covid-19 cases spike

The Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI) has called for an urgent implementation of Covid-19 protective measures.

This follows a spike of Covid-19 pandemic cases witnessed this month.

On December 27-28, 2022, the Ministry of Health through in its daily status update reported 198 and 277 active cases respectively.

This includes one death.

This situation has worried the ZACCI president, Chabuka Kawesha who has called on government to move fast in the implementation of Covid-19 safety measures as treat the matter as urgent.

Kawesha said the government already had the framework that helped Zambia reduce the spread and management of Covid-19.

“Move fast is our message. The business community and environment were hit hard and hurt the various income stream of many Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Corporates to which we are still recovering.

“The rising Covid-19 cases seen this week must be an alert enough. Act now,” he said in a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday.

He warned that if government did not put in place key notable measures now, social media would drive public protective measures, saying it was better for the authorities to best take the lead.

Kawesha stated that the social media was already hype with stories on a fresh Covid-19 waves and that in Zambia, Covid-19 test results had shown an increase in the active cases.

“With the evolution of Covid-19 virus, the symptoms related to the infection have also changed significantly. As they say, prevention is better than cure,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kawesha called on the Disaster Management Unit (DMMU), Zambia National Service (ZNS) and local councils countrywide to immediately commerce Mosquito Truck Spraying.

He said mosquito had widely become a nuisance and growing in numbers emphasising the need for government to introduce the 6000, 12000 to 24000 litres mosquito truck sprayers urgently.

“Truck spraying is used to Control and reduce the number of mosquitoes that can spread viruses. This can reduce your chances of getting sick.

“It also can control and reduce the number of nuisance mosquitoes that bother people but do not spread viruses. We can treat entire neighbourhoods in a short period of time compared to some other methods,” Kawesha said.
