Businessman Kasanda appears in court over alleged aggravated $5 million robbery charge

Business tycoon, Sedrick Kasanda, on Wednesday appeared at the Lusaka Magistrate Court on allegations of aggravated robbery related to the US$5 million stolen from an Egyptian last year.

Kasanda could, however not be committed to the High Court as the Director of Public Prosecutions Gilbert Phiri was yet to issue such instructions.

The accused who looked calm appeared for mention before Magistrate George Njobvu.

It was alleged that on August 13, 2023, between 18:00 hours and 22:00 hours, Kasanda acting together with unknown persons and armed with pistols robbed Egyptian Adel Botros of US$5 million at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) and also threatened to use violence.

The alleged robbery was reported to Westwood Police Station on August 30, 2023.

Before his appearance at the Subordinate Court, Kasanda filed a writ of habeas corpus in the Lusaka High Court contesting his continued detention at Twin Palm police station on a charge of aggravated robbery without being arraigned before court after the stipulated 48 hours.
