Citizens First Party unimpressed by govt claims, alleges organization denied right to hold public rallies 19 times

The Citizens First Party has cautiously welcomed remarks attributed to Minister of Information and Media Cornelius Mweetwa, assuring opposition leaders of their right to freely interact with citizens.

Party Spokesperson, Dalitso Tembo, said that while the CF welcomes Mweetwa’s sentiments, the reality on the ground paints a different picture, emphasizing that what was needed was genuine political will to match the pronouncements.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, Tembo said the Citizens First Party has so far been denied the right to hold public rallies 19 times under the UPND government.

She added that, in contrast, the party had only been granted permission on four occasions to conduct its gatherings.

“The figures alone demonstrate that the supposed environment of ‘free political activity’ remains largely theoretical rather than practical,” Tembo said.

Tembo also cited a recent incident in Chadiza where party president Harry Kalaba was questioned at Chadiza Police Station over his presence in the area, describing such incidents as evidence that the environment was not conducive for political parties.

“What we are witnessing, however, is a growing awareness among Zambians of a ‘Nyuuuu wind of change’ sweeping across the nation at a fast pace,” Tembo said.

She stated that this change was not confined to the political arena but extended to all sectors of society, as citizens increasingly demand fairness, justice, and accountability.

Tembo further said it was not for Mweetwa to “allow” opposition leaders to interact with citizens, as doing so was a constitutional right, especially as the country moved closer to general elections.

She added that Zambians were now more determined than ever to reclaim their democratic space.

“The Citizens First remains committed to advancing this cause peacefully and lawfully, ensuring that every Zambian voice is heard,” Tembo assured.

Tembo urged government to demonstrate political will and ensure a level playing field for all political competitors.
