Copper Queens, Grace Chanda, Florence Mwila win big at National Sports Awards

The Zambia Women’s National Team scooped the Team of the Year accolade at the 2022 National Sports Awards held at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka on Saturday night.

The Copper Queens finished ahead of the Zambia National Equestrian Federation and Zambia Pool Union after breaking international records in 2022.

Bruce Mwape’s side finished third at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), qualified for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and won the COSAFA Women’s Championship for the first time in the tournament’s history.

To put icing on the cake, Copper Queens striker Grace Chanda won the 2022 Sport Woman of the Year accolade at the National Sports Awards.

The Madrid CFF forward shrugged off competition from Leah Heigate and Margaret Tembo to win the prestigious award.

At the same awards ceremony, Copper Queens Assistant Coach Florence Mwila won the female Coach of the year award.

Mwila is also ZANACO Ladies Football Club coach.

Former Chipolopolo skipper Enock Mwepu received a special President’s Award for his contribution to football in the country. The Computer was forced to retire from football due to medical reasons.

Late former national team Doctor Joseph Kabungo was also posthumously honoured.

The colorful event was graced by Sports and Youth Minister Elvis Nkandu with musical acts by Moses Sakala, Trina Lusaka, Wezi, Yo Maps, Chanda na Kay, Natasha and T-Sean spicing up the event.

Sportswoman of the Year(Differently Abled)- Ivy Chanda

Coach of the Year(Female)- Florence Mwila(Copper Queens & Zanaco Women)

Coach of the Year( Male)- Douglas Kalembo(Athletics)

Sports Journalist of the Year(Print)- Godfrey Dube(Times of Zambia & News Diggers)

Sports Journalist of the Year(Electronic)- Memory Malisawa(ZNBC)

Best Admistrator- Tesfa Shinkombwe(Zambia Pool Union)

Team of the Year(Female)- Copper Queens

Team of the Year(Male)- Motorcross Team

Young Sports Man of the Year- William .C. Chinzewu(Drought)

Young Sports Woman of the Year- Jade Phiri(Swimming)

Federation of the Year- Zambia Pool Union

Minister’s Award- Late Dr Kabungo(Posthumously)

Medal of Honour- MTN Zambia

President’s Award- Enock ‘Computer’ Mwepu.
