Kantanshi Member of Parliament Anthony Mumba has urged government to speed up the work on Mufulira-Mokambo road that is in a serious deplorable state.

Mumba said in an interview in Mufulira on Friday that, the road in question was an important economic road looking at a number of trucks destined to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) wanting to use the road.

“The increase in the number of trucks wanting to use Mokambo road tells that business was there, I wonder why it is taking long to upgrade the road despite its economic importance,” he said.

Mumba said even if the country was financially stressed, it should not fail to construct the 18 kilometre stretch that is almost making it impossible for motorists to pass.

He was concerned that Mufulira like any other Copperbelt town was a rain belt saying if works do not start in April, rains will catch up adding that by the time people realised it would be elections time.

Regarding Mopani Copper Mine (MCM), Mumba said President Hakainde Hichilema reassurance during his recent visit to the mining town was encouraging.

He said lack of capital injection in Mopani was leading to economic misery, claiming that marriages were crumbling because of the economic situation the town.
