Flood Alert! Eastern, Muchinga, Copperbelt classified as high-risk regions by Meteorological Department

The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, through the Zambia Meteorological Department, has issued a 24-hour weather alert warning of an increased risk of flooding in several parts of the country.

According to the alert prepared on February 9, 2026, the Eastern, Muchinga and Copperbelt Provinces had been classified as high-risk regions, with heavy rainfall expected as the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) continues to oscillate over the central and southern parts of Zambia.

The Department noted that improved soil moisture levels due to persistent heavy falls may lead to flash floods, waterlogging, and rising water levels in streams and rivers.

The Zambia Meteorological Department listed numerous districts under the high-risk category, including Chadiza, Chama, Chasefu, Chibombo, Chingola, Kitwe, Ndola, Luanshya, Mufulira, Mpika, Lundazi, Nakonde, Serenje, Petauke, Sinda, Solwezi, and several others across the affected provinces.

A large number of districts across the country have also been placed under medium risk, including parts of Lusaka Province and surrounding areas such as Lusaka, Chongwe, Kafue, Kabwe, Mazabuka, Kasama, Mansa, Mbala, Samfya, Zambezi, and many more.

Meanwhile, districts largely in Western and Southern Zambia have been classified under the low-risk category, including Livingstone, Mongu, Kalabo, Choma, Sesheke, Senanga, Sioma, Shangombo, Zimba, and others.

The Meteorological Department has urged members of the public, especially those in high-risk zones, to take necessary safety measures.
Key advisories include avoiding flooded areas, streams, and rivers.

It added; “Do not attempt to drive through flooded roads, particularly during heavy rainfall, and keep surroundings clear of debris to prevent blocked drainage systems.”

The Ministry has encouraged communities to remain alert and follow updates from official channels, as further advisories may be issued depending on evolving weather conditions.
