Govt announces resumption of academic studies at Kapiri Mposhi Technical High school after spate of fire outbreaks

Government has announced that Kapiri Mposhi Technical High School which was shut down last month due to a spate of infernos will reopen for examination classes only on Monday June 19, 2023.

The school experienced three fire incidents two of which started when pupils were having prep in their classrooms around 19:00 hours while the last one occurred around 01:00 hours in a compartment housing four pupils.

Addressing a media a media briefing in Lusaka on Wednesday, Minister of Education Douglas Syakalima said the school will reopen non examination classes once investigations on the fires that characterized the school are concluded.

Syakalima has directed grades nine and twelve to report to their school on Sunday June 18, 2023 without fail because this measure is meant to ensure that they do not fall too behind in their lessons schedules.

“I would like to assure parents, Kapiri girl’s learners and the general public of maximum security provided by the Zambia Police. As soon as investigations are concluded we will rehabilitate the school and facilitate for the remaining grades to join their fellow learners,” he said.

Syakalima said the Ministry has since disbursed up to K748, 000 towards the rehabilitation of the school and has also assured parents and the pupils of enhanced security once the school re-opens.

“As a Ministry, we are grateful for the support received from parents, Mulungushi University for donating One Hundred and Twenty Thousand Kwacha (K120,000) and the surrounding schools for contributing Sixty-one Thousand Kwacha (K61,000),” he said.

Syakalima said that investigations are still ongoing and has assured parents, Kapiri Girls learners and the general public of maximum security provided by the Zambia police.

“As soon as investigations are concluded we will rehabilitate the school and facilitate for the remaining grades to join their fellow learners. The school has received solidarity from different stakeholders,” he said.
