Geoffrey Musonda, Change Mindset Zambia Executive Director, says for Africa and Zambia, in particular, to attain meaningful freedom and independence, local mineral resource ownership should be a must.

Musonda in an interview in Kitwe on Saturday said while the continent is endowed with huge mineral resources, its citizens continue to wallow in poverty.

“There is need for mindset change, we have just celebrated the Africa Freedom Day, freedom with economic power has been elusive, we need to own the means of production,” he said.

Musonda said the ‘grave’ mistake the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) made was to ‘auction’ almost all critical industries.

He said going capitalism does not mean stopping government from participating in the means of production but provide the much-needed competition to private sector to create a balance.

“I think we did not think through as a country before embarking on wholesale privatisation of major industries because we have ended up at the mercy of multinational corporations, no Zambian owns a big industry in Zambia,” Musonda said.

He also said Africa needed to unite because “we are one people like South Africa opposition leader Malema emphasize on unity of purpose for Africans.”

Change Mindset Zambia is civil society organization that advocates for good governance, preserving the environment and promoting social change.
