A 41-year-old man of Kasama has died after being electrocuted when iron sheets he was carrying came into contact with a live power line.

The deceased, identified as Justin Mukupa, reportedly sustained the fatal injuries on March 17, 2026, around 15:00 hours near ESCO, close to the Chambeshi Water Plant in Kasama.

According to police, the incident was reported by a friend of the deceased, Enerst Chewe, 39, of Mulenga Hill, a carpenter and plumber.

Northern Province Commanding Officer Simunji Mulonda said preliminary investigations indicated that Chewe had met the deceased while on his way to collect iron sheets from BUCUS Industry.

Mulonda said the deceased, who was in the company of colleagues at the time, decided to accompany Chewe to collect the iron sheets, and both later carried the materials together.

“As the duo were coming from BUCUS company towards ESCO carrying iron sheets which were 7.5 metres long,” he said,
“The deceased accidentally raised the iron sheets he was carrying, which got in contact with ZESCO 11 kilovolts (KV) overhead cables, electrocuting him instantly.”

The victim was rushed to Kasama General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The matter was later reported to police, who inspected the body and observed burn injuries.

Mulonda said an inquiry had since been opened, and that the body had been deposited in the Kasama General Hospital mortuary awaiting burial.

He has since urged members of the public to exercise caution when working near live power lines operated by ZESCO.
