Key political figures lament moves by ruling UPND to silence opposition

National Democratic Congress Party (NDC) leader, Saboi Imboela, has accused President Hakainde Hichilema and the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) of attempting to silence opposition voices.

Imboela said the government’s actions — including the arrest of opposition figures such as Brian Mundubile — showed that the ruling party was afraid of losing power.

In an interview with Zambia Monitor, she argued that Zambians were not deceived by what she described as government propaganda and would vote the UPND out in August 2026.

Imboela stressed that intimidation tactics would not deter the opposition.

She further accused the government of weaponizing state institutions to harass and victimize opponents.

“Zambia will never be Tanzania where we saw the President of that country arresting key opposition leaders ahead of the country’s elections,” Imboela said.

The Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) shared similar sentiments.

Party spokesperson, Anthony Chibuye, criticised President Hichilema for emphasizing “self-claimed successes” while failing to deliver visible development.

Chibuye also questioned the number of opposition figures facing sedition or hate-speech charges.

“The people that will make the opposition unite is President HH and the UPND themselves because of what they’re trying to do all the time — trying to harass, intimidate and victimize the opposition,” he said.

He urged President Hichilema to focus on national priorities, including job creation, maternal healthcare, and better wages for struggling workers.
