A 20-year-old man has appeared before the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court accused of sexually assaulting a fellow detainee while in police custody.

The court heard that the alleged incident occurred on March 23, 2025, at Kanyama Police Station in Lusaka.

According to the charge, the accused — whose name has been withheld — is alleged to have had carnal knowledge of another detainee against the order of nature, contrary to Section 155(a) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that both men were in detention facing separate robbery-related allegations at the time. The accused had reportedly been in custody for three months, while the complainant had spent about one month in detention.

The prosecution further alleged that the accused led the complainant to the police station toilet, where the offence was committed.

The court was told that after the alleged incident, the complainant was found with bruises around the anus.

When the matter came up for continued trial before the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court, the accused denied the charge.

Trial continues today.
