Finance and National Planning Minister, Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane, is leading a Zambian delegation to Rome, Italy, to represent President Hakainde Hichilema at a high-level meeting focused on the Lobito Corridor Project.

According to a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday by the Zambian Embassy in Rome, Musokotwane will participate in the High-Level Meeting on the “Mattei Plan and the EU Global Gateway: A Common Effort with the African Continent”, scheduled to take place on June 20, 2025.

The gathering followed an earlier Ministerial Technical Meeting held on March 27, 2025, also in Rome, where Zambia was represented by Transport and Logistics Minister Frank Tayali.

Upon arrival, Musokotwane and his delegation were reportedly received by Zambia’s Ambassador to Italy, Patricia Kondolo, who welcomed the government’s active participation in the critical regional dialogue.

The Zambian delegation is expected to hold engagements with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, with discussions centred on the advancement of the Lobito Corridor Project.

The project is a flagship infrastructure initiative under the Mattei Plan and the EU Global Gateway, forming part of the G7’s broader infrastructure partnerships aimed at bolstering economic development in Africa.

Described as one of the largest regional projects in Africa, the Lobito Corridor links Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Zambia, with prospects of extending connectivity into Tanzania.

The high-level meeting has also drawn participation from other corridor countries, as well as key institutions including the African Union Commission, the World Bank, and the Africa Finance Corporation.
