Police arrest 5 for land grabbing in Chongwe, 3 others for church break-in

Zambia police have arrested five people for illegal land allocation in Chongwe District.

This is after Police received information from the Director of Galaunia Farms Limited that unknown persons trespassed the company’s farms by subdividing and selling land to unsuspecting members of the public.

The suspects have been identified as Jatel Zulu aged 55, Patrick Kapya age not known both of Meanwood Phase three, Steward Kapandula aged 35 of Catapuls, Tobias Mwemba aged 22 of Kampasa village and Prince Chanda aged 22 of Obama area.

According to Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Danny Mwale, the incident occurred between June 2022 and January 4, 2023 in Kampasa area of Chongwe District.

‘Police were alerted on January 9, 2023 around 12:30 hours investigations were instituted which led to the arrest of the suspects on January 18, 2023 around 01:00 hours at Galaunia Farms.

“Police also recovered a tent that was mounted at the site including surveying machines and land documents,” Mwale said in a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday.

He stated that investigations were ongoing as Police had engaged the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

The suspects are detained in Police custody awaiting to be formally charged.

Meanwhile, police have arrested three suspects believed to have been behind the breaking-in and theft of musical instruments at Healing for the Nations Church in Lusaka’s Makeni Simoson area.

Mwale said police had also recovered an Amplifier, a Keyboard, a Speaker, a Microwave receiver, hybrid and crown Amplifiers from the suspects.

He identified the suspects as Mwila Botha aged 26, Jazmine Nyambe aged 32 both of Makeni Villa and Peter Phiri aged 26 of Matero in Lusaka.

“The trio is alleged to have broken into a Church and stole property valued at K 48, 000 on January 16, 2023 around 18:00 hours.

“Police were alerted and immediately investigations were instituted leading to the arrest of the suspects around 03:00 hours along Kalusha Bwalya road near Makeni Simoson building” Mwale said.

He explained that was after a tip-off from a member of the public who saw a Toyota Spacio black in colour bearing registration number ACR 2807 which was loaded with properties suspected to have been stolen.

According to Mwale, the Pastor of the Church was called and he positively identified the recovered properties.

The suspects are in Police custody charged with Breaking into a Building and Committing a Felony Therein.
