Stanchart backs youth entrepreneurship with K3.45 million conference sponsorship

Standard Chartered Bank Zambia has called on the country’s youths to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset and not shy away from pursuing bold ideas, as it announced a K3.45 million sponsorship towards the 2025 Africa Must Think Conference.

Speaking in Lusaka on Wednesday during the sponsorship announcement, Standard Chartered Bank Zambia Chief Executive Officer, Sonny Zulu, underscored the importance of mindset over capital in achieving business success.

“Capital alone does not grow businesses. What truly matters is having the right entrepreneurial mindset. Too often, people believe they lack capital when, in reality, they possess resources they fail to recognise,” Zulu said.

He commended the Africa Must Think initiative, describing it as a valuable platform that nurtures entrepreneurial thinking and leadership among the youth.

“We are investing K3.45 million because we believe this seed will spark significant change. We expect to see bold youths and big ideas emerge — young people unafraid to act, without waiting for permission or applause,” Zulu added.

Receiving the sponsorship, DLN Institute Chief Executive Officer, Dumisani Ncube, whose organisation hosts the conference, revealed that last year’s event attracted over 30,000 participants and expressed optimism for even greater numbers this year.

Ncube also lamented the retrogressive trends dominating public discourse in Zambia, urging young people to focus on progressive, nation-building ideas.

“We are distracted by drama and things that add no value to our future. It is these trivial matters that trend, keeping young minds busy on their keyboards, posting and commenting about things that lead nowhere,” Ncube said.

He challenged the youth to prioritise constructive and forward-looking pursuits, adding that the conference would serve as a platform for such engagements.

Ncube further announced the launch of the Africa Must Think movement, aimed at mobilising young thinkers across Zambia and the continent.

“We want to be deliberate about this — to establish a presence in districts and provinces, bringing together individuals we call ‘African Thinkers.’

These are people committed to making our country and continent great, and who believe we hold the solutions to Africa’s challenges,” he stated.

The 2025 Africa Must Think Conference is expected to convene thousands of young entrepreneurs, leaders and thinkers, fostering dialogue and initiatives around entrepreneurship, leadership and national development.
