Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) has suspended all underground operations being conducted by Reliant Mining in Kitwe and Mufulira following two fatal underground accidents recorded within a space of under three weeks, the latest occurring on January 31, 2026.
MCM Public Relations Manager, Nebert Mbewe, said the suspension of Reliant Mining operations in both districts will remain in effect until investigations into the incidents were completed.
Mbewe disclosed this in a statement issued in Kitwe District on the Copperbelt Province on Tuesday.
“Mopani management expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, and friends affected by this tragic incident, and will continue to provide the necessary support during this difficult time,” he assured.

Meanwhile, Mulenga said Reliant Mining was expected to submit a comprehensive safety plan, after which Mopani will review and approve the proposed corrective and preventive measures aimed at addressing the identified gaps.
He added that the reinstatement of Reliant Mining’s operations would only be considered upon Mopani’s satisfactory acceptance of the plan and verification of the company’s readiness to implement the required safety improvements.
“As part of reinforcing safety leadership and accountability, Mopani Executive Management led by the Chief Executive Officer Charles Sakanya, has commenced a series of mass safety meetings with all underground employees and supervisors in Mufulira and Kitwe,” Mulenga said.
He explained that the engagements were aimed at strengthening compliance with critical safety rules, prohibiting illegal and high-risk behaviors, enhancing supervision, and encouraging personal accountability for safety at all levels.
Mulenga reiterated the company’s strong commitment to safety, responsible mining, and ensuring that every employee and contractor returned home safely after every shift.
