10 Killed, five injured in Saturday road accidents across Zambia

Ten people lost their lives while five others sustained injuries in separate road traffic accidents recorded across Zambia on Saturday, June 13, with excessive speed, dangerous overtaking and loss of vehicle control among the suspected causes of the crashes.

In a statement issued ion Sunday, Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer, Godfrey Chilabi, said the fatal accidents occurred in Eastern, Copperbelt, Central, Lusaka and Southern provinces, prompting renewed calls for motorists to observe traffic regulations.

In Eastern Province, a male juvenile died after being struck by a Toyota Dyna at Madzimoyo Market along the Great East Road in Chipata.

Police said the driver, Frank Phiri, 34, allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed.

On the Copperbelt, an unidentified cyclist believed to be between 30 and 40 years old was killed after being hit by a Mitsubishi Rosa bus along the Ndola-Kitwe Road.

The victim was pronounced dead at Ndola Teaching Hospital.

Central Province recorded two fatal incidents.

In Mkushi District, a head-on collision between a Toyota Land Cruiser and a FAW truck and trailer claimed the life of the Land Cruiser driver, Jackson Hilajalia of Lusaka.

“The truck driver allegedly attempted an improper overtaking manoeuvre, while both a passenger and the truck driver sustained injuries,” Chilabi said.

In Chisamba District, an unidentified pedestrian aged between 25 and 30 died in a hit-and-run accident near Golden Valley on the Great North Road.

Police have launched investigations to trace the driver and vehicle involved.
Lusaka Province also recorded multiple fatalities.

Jimmy Ngulube, 27, died after the Toyota IST he was driving struck a pavement curb and billboard before overturning along Garden Road.

His passenger, Friday Zulu, 24, suffered serious injuries and was admitted to the University Teaching Hospital.

In a separate incident along Mungwi Road near Quality Fuelling Station, 35-year-old Mvula Nkula was fatally struck by a Toyota Crown while crossing the road.

The deadliest crash occurred in Chongwe District at Mpango Junction, where two Volvo trucks collided head-on after one of the drivers allegedly attempted to overtake improperly.

The driver of one truck and two passengers died on the spot, while the other driver was injured.
One of the trucks caught fire following the collision.

Meanwhile, in Southern Province, Casewell Mudenda, 41, of Itezhi-Tezhi District died after his motorcycle collided with a Mercedes-Benz truck at Ngabo Road Junction in Namwala District.

The truck driver sustained injuries.

Chilabi urged motorists to obey speed limits, avoid dangerous overtaking and exercise caution around pedestrians and cyclists, stressing that adherence to traffic laws is essential to reducing preventable road deaths.
