Zambia’s Department of Immigration has detained 111 suspected illegal immigrants in separate operations in Eastern and Southern provinces, as part of ongoing efforts to curb irregular migration.
Department spokesperson, Namati Nshinka, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday.
He said 101 people were apprehended during a clean-up operation conducted on April 24 in Vubwi District.
“Those apprehended comprised 92 Malawian nationals, five (5) Mozambican nationals, one (1) Burundian national, and three (3) individuals whose nationalities are yet to be determined,” Nshinka said.
Authorities said screening was underway to determine the immigration status of those detained and to facilitate appropriate legal action.

In a separate operation on the same date, immigration officers based at Victoria Falls Border Control acted on a tip-off about suspected migrants being transported through the Mukuni gorges.
Officers intercepted 10 Somalia nationals aged between 19 and 30 near Mukuni Village, about seven kilometres from a toll gate.
A Zambian national, identified as Nzala Sibajene, 30, of Libuyu Compound, was also detained for allegedly aiding the group.
Preliminary investigations indicate the migrants were being moved through the gorges toward neighbouring Zimbabwe.
Investigations are ongoing, and a Zimbabwean national identified only as Josphat, believed to have facilitated the movement, remains at large.
“Members of the public are encouraged to continue reporting suspected immigration-related offences to the nearest Immigration Office or other law enforcement agencies,” Nshinka said.
