In a statement, Namitondo said the Church is deeply saddened on the Chilubi Island tragedy that occurred on Lake Bangweulu yesterday, resulting in the loss of 11 Adventist Youths and the number has increased to 14.

He said the Church is grateful to the rescuers on board the Luchelenganga Boat, who were traveling from Samfya to Chilubi Island, for their heroic efforts in saving 23 survivors, including the youths, by throwing life jackets to those in the water.

“The search for other passengers is still ongoing, and we will provide more accurate numbers as they become available. We urge the Church and the public to remain calm during this devastating time, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the families who have lost their loved ones,” Namitondo said.

He said the SDA Church has lost gallant soldiers of the cross, who would have continued to play a leading role in evangelism and leading other youths to their Savior, Jesus Christ.

Namitondo has appealed to Government authorities and search parties to continue their rescue efforts, and request that counseling services for the survivors and their families is provided as they cope with this traumatic experience.

“We pray for God’s comfort to strengthen them in this trying moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this tragedy. We will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available,” he said.
