76-year-old woman dies in garbage truck accident

A 76-year-old woman has died after a Dumper truck bucket hit her while she was collecting garbage at Chingwere Dumpsite area in Lusaka, says Zambia Police.

Deputy Police Public Relations, Danny Mwale, has identified as Tikulileni Tembo of S.O.S near Chingwere turn-off was among other ‘garbage collectors’ who rushed to the truck while the Dumper truck driver was in the process of dumping garbage when in the process, the bucket hit her resulting in her sustaining fatal injuries.

Mwale in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lusaka said Tembo was rushed to Materol Level One Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

He said the truck driver, identified as Yotam Banda aged 23 of Garden Park reported the incident to Police which occurred on April 10, 2023 around 16:00 hours at Chingwere Dumpsite area.

“The body is in the University Teaching Hospitals mortuary awaiting Postmortem and burial,” Mwale said.

He said Police have opened an inquiry file into the matter.
