Ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) Senior Member, Kelvin Mayondi, says the government should reintroduce compulsory national service to inculcate patriotism in the citizenry.
Last year, President Hakainde Hichilema, hinted on his government’s intention to reintroduce compulsory national service but no further policy direction has been pushed so far .
Mayondi, the veteran politician who has held various political positions in the former ruling party parties, said patriotism has waned.
He said this in interview in Kalulushi recently.
“There is no patriotism by the current generation, that is why I feel introducing national service will inculcate the sense of belonging, patriotism and responsibility in the young generation, “he said.

Mayondi said selfish interests seems to be prevailing making the country stagnant.
He said as the person who has ‘seen it all’ the country needed to protect its moral fibre to fight vices such as corruption among others.
Mayondi said President Hichilema was working hard to restore the country’s lost economic glory but that his efforts were being derailed by people with selfish interests.
“President Hichilema needs the support of all of us, he is trying hard to restore the country normalcy,people with selfish interests are making him look back ,” he said.
