Govt to subdivide Mufumbwe mining areas for allocation to cooperatives

The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has announced plans to subdivide mining areas in Mufumbwe District for allocation to cooperatives, in a move aimed at curbing nomadic mining and creating structured opportunities for young Zambians.

In a statement, Mines Permanent Secretary, Hapenga Kabeta, said the initiative would later be extended to other gold-rich regions.

“To improve safety in artisanal and small-scale mining, the ministry will introduce a newly developed Pit Side Manual next month, offering guidance on safer mining practices to address fatalities caused by a lack of technical expertise,” Kabeta said in a statement.

He also revealed plans to establish dedicated market centres for mining cooperatives to sell their gold, adopting successful models from Tanzania and Ghana to promote transparency, fair pricing, and streamlined trade.

Kabeta issued a stern warning against the illegal use of mercury in gold processing, highlighting its serious health and environmental risks.

Additionally, he disclosed government plans to partner with large-scale investors to enhance gold mining operations, with the aim of maximising the sector’s potential while ensuring benefits are shared equitably among citizens.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to active participation in mining ventures, noting that collaborations with experienced investors would help modernise operations, boost productivity, and create sustainable economic opportunities for Zambians.
