Zambia Consumer Association demands bread price reduction as flour costs reportedly drop

0

The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has expressed concern over the continued high price of bread, despite a significant drop in the cost of flour.

ZACA Executive Secretary, Juba Sakala, noted that the price of a 50kg bag of flour has decreased from K1,150 to K950, yet this reduction has not been reflected in bread prices offered to consumers.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, Sakala also raised alarm over reports that some bakeries were allegedly producing bread weighing 400 grams less than the advertised 700 grams.

“This practice not only undermines consumer trust but also allows these bakers to profit from both inflated prices and the sale of underweight products,” he said.

Sakala urged bakeries to immediately pass on the cost savings from cheaper flour to consumers by adjusting their prices.

“In addition, we call upon the Zambia Weights and Measures Agency and the Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency to conduct surprise inspections of bakeries to ensure compliance with weight regulations,” he added.

He expressed hope that bakers would act responsibly by reducing bread prices, allowing consumers to benefit directly from the decline in flour prices.
