The Chinese Embassy in Zambia has strongly condemned a recent documentary released by a local daily tabloid, accusing the publishers of deliberate distortion of China’s role in Zambia’s development.
In response to the documentary titled “Chinese Investments in Zambia: the Good, the Bad and the Dangerous,” the Embassy accused the Newspaper of sensationalism.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, by the unnamed Chinese embassy spokesperson, described the documentary as a deliberate attempt to discredit China’s investments and its longstanding relationship with Zambia.
“China supports freedom of the press, but we will not allow our reputation to be damaged under the guise of media freedom,” the statement reads.
The embassy pledged its full support to the just act by the Chinese community in Zambia to protect their reputation and legitimate rights and interests.
It accused the daily tabloid of deliberately downplaying China’s contribution to Zambia’s economic and social development, while dwelling excessively on negative stories, including a number of criminal cases not even remotely related to Chinese investments.
In the statement, the embassy stated that the publication raised serious questions about the hidden motives and the professional competence of the production team.
“We urge the relevant media house to act as a responsible player free of bias and correct its mistakes by covering Chinese investment stories in a more balanced, objective and fair manner,” reads the statement.
