Inventor of radio station prototype gets commendation, as regulatory agency warns operators without licenses

The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) has commended a Computer Science teacher in Mwinilunga for developing a prototype radio station using scrap materials.

IBA Director for Corporate Communication, Katendi Wandi, said the innovation demonstrated the teacher’s commitment to leveraging technology to educate and engage his community, while highlighting the potential of affordable, homegrown solutions to connect people.

In a statement, she explained that although the prototype was not yet a fully established broadcasting station, the Authority had engaged the inventor following media reports and encouraged him to work with relevant regulatory bodies to formalise the initiative.

“The Authority has taken keen interest in this innovation considering that setting up a broadcasting station can be costly, as most of the equipment is imported. This showcases local ingenuity,” Wandi stated.

She further reminded individuals interested in establishing broadcasting services to adhere to procedures outlined in the IBA Act, which requires operators to obtain a licence before going on air.

“The public may wish to know that operating without a licence is a serious offence. The IBA stands ready to guide and support innovators and other prospective licensees to comply with the law, while nurturing innovations that benefit communities,” she said.
