Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) claims to have disbursed over K38 million in outstanding terminal benefits to 104 former employees, covering the period from 2023 to 2025.
The total payout of K38,170,952.29 is said to include retirement benefits for 77 retirees, gratuity payments for 22 employees whose contracts ended, and death benefits for five deceased employees.
According to a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday by ZRL Manager for Public Relations, Sombe Ng’onga, the settlement follows sustained efforts by management and the Board of Directors to prioritize employee welfare.
ZRL Managing Director, Cuthbert Malindi, commended the government, through the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), for its support in settling the outstanding benefits.
Malindi said the settlement was a milestone that underscored the company’s commitment to fulfilling its financial and moral obligations to both current and former employees.

“We are delighted to announce that outstanding terminal benefits for our former employees have now been cleared. Settling these obligations is not only a legal duty but a moral responsibility,” he said.
He added that management would implement a plan to ensure that all retirement packages are settled as they fall due, allowing employees to receive their entitlements on time.
Malindi also acknowledged the contributions of the former workforce to the company’s growth.
“ZRL further appreciates its former employees for their patience and understanding during the period leading to this milestone, and assures all stakeholders that mechanisms have been put in place to prevent future backlogs of employee entitlements,” he said.
