Zambia Railways boss, Malindi, regional partners meet, chart new course for rail integration

Reports say Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) Managing Director, Cuthbert Malindi, has held high-level talks with three regional transport partners aimed at strengthening cross-border rail logistics and enhancing integration along the Dar es Salaam Corridor.

During a strategic visit to Dar es Salaam, Malindi was said to have met with the chief executive officers of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA), Malawi Cargo Centre Limited (MCCL), and Zambia Cargo and Logistics (Zamcargo).

In a statement issued on Tuesday, ZRL said the engagements focused on fostering operational synergy, improving cargo handling efficiency, and reinforcing long-term collaboration in support of regional trade.

“Our goal is to build a seamless, efficient railway network that bolsters regional trade, reduces transportation costs, and delivers tangible economic value,” Malindi said, adding, “This visit wasn’t merely for familiarisation — it was about establishing lasting partnerships for mutual success.”

TAZARA Chief Executive Officer Bruno Ching’andu underscored the need for harmonised operations to unlock the corridor’s full logistical potential.

“By harmonising our operations, we can provide customers with a more reliable, integrated service. TAZARA is eager to revitalise its partnerships with ZRL and Zamcargo, which have historically served Zambia’s interests,” Ching’andu said.

Zamcargo Chief Executive Officer, Vyonsi Manda, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the company’s dedication to supporting efficient bulk cargo movement.

“As a bulk cargo clearing and forwarding company, Zamcargo remains a strong advocate of rail transport. We are committed to this partnership to ensure cargo moves swiftly, safely, and efficiently from port to final destination,” he said.

The meeting concluded with a resolution to maintain regular engagement and explore joint projects aimed at modernising infrastructure, upgrading operational systems, and attracting new freight volumes to the corridor.

The engagement may mark a renewed push for regional rail integration, with the ultimate goal of strengthening intra-African trade and enhancing cross-border logistics efficiency.
