Acting Secretary to the Cabinet, Siazongo Siakalenge, has emphasised the importance of unity and development in consolidating the benefits of Zambia’s independence.

Siakalenge said as the country continued to celebrate its 61st independence anniversary, it was crucial to build on its hard-won peace and stability to drive development and improve the lives of citizens.

Speaking at the 7th Senior Public Service Management Meeting held at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka on Monday, Siakalenge noted that unity and development were closely linked.

He emphasised that it was only by working together that Zambians could achieve their full potential.

“Zambia’s peace and unity are a source of national pride, with the national motto ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ being a beacon of hope and unity, and the President’s addition of ‘One People’ further emphasizes the importance of unity and shared identity,” Siakalenge said.

He stated that reaffirming the nation’s commitment to unity promoted a sense of shared purpose and belonging among citizens.
Siakalenge also stressed the need for digitalisation to enhance efficient and effective delivery of services, thereby promoting unity and development.

“By leveraging technology, the government can increase transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, bridging geographical divides and ensuring access to government services for all citizens,” he said.

The Acting Secretary to the Cabinet underscored the importance of transforming national institutions, particularly in the mining sector, to ensure that natural resources were used for the prosperity of the Zambian people.

He noted that the sector was critical to the country’s economy and that its transformation could contribute to development goals and economic diversification by enhancing transparency and accountability, promoting local content and participation, and ensuring sustainable management.

“The President’s directive to enhance local content and participation in the mining sector is a significant step towards ensuring Zambians derive tangible benefits from their natural resources — creating jobs, stimulating entrepreneurship, and promoting a sense of ownership and shared prosperity,” Siakalenge said.
