The government says it has disbursed K10.8 million to Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company Limited as part of counterpart funding for the Zambia Water and Sanitation Project.

Minister of Water Development and Sanitation Collins Nzovu said the disbursement underscored the government’s continued commitment to expanding access to clean and safe water and improving sanitation services nationwide.

In a statement issued in Lusaka by Prince Chiyuni, the Ministry’s Principal Public Relations Officer, Nzovu said the funding also reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to supporting commercial utilities in delivering sustainable and reliable services to all citizens.

He said the project, now in its final phase, is set to benefit over 600,000 residents in Chingola, Chililabombwe, and Mufulira.

“The project is expected to be substantially completed by the first quarter of 2026, with overall progress currently exceeding 95 percent,” Nzovu stated.

He expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved by Mulonga Water, noting that two of the four newly constructed reservoirs were already operational, while the remaining two were over 90 percent complete.

Nzovu added that the new Chingola Water Treatment Plant stream was hscheduled to commence assisted operations in November 2025, marking a significant milestone that will enhance the reliability of water supply in Chingola and surrounding areas.

“Under the rehabilitation component of the project, five out of seven targeted water installations have been completed and are awaiting electrical connection. Meanwhile, 81 kilometers of the planned 83-kilometer bulk transmission line have been laid,” he said.

He noted that these combined efforts would strengthen water supply capacity, improve operational efficiency, and enhance system resilience across the service areas.

Nzovu urged the water utility to exercise prudence, transparency, and accountability in the use of public funds, emphasizing that the ultimate goal was to ensure communities benefited from these critical infrastructure investments as soon as possible.

He reaffirmed government’s unwavering commitment to providing sustainable water and sanitation services to all Zambians, noting that such investments safeguard public health, uphold human dignity, and contribute to the nation’s socio-economic development.

“I also wish to commend Mulonga Water Supply and Sanitation Company for your progress and assure you of the Ministry’s continued support toward the successful completion and full operation of the Zambia Water and Sanitation Project,” he said.
