Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Collins Nzovu, has urged Zambians to desist from encroachment, deforestation, and pollution of water bodies and catchment areas.
Nzovu emphasized that protecting vital ecosystems was essential to sustaining the purity and longevity of water sources for future generations, particularly for surrounding communities.
The Minister made the remarks in a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday by Ministry Principal Public Relations Officer, Prince Chiyuni.
He assured the public that government would continue investing in modern and resilient water infrastructure to ensure water security, protect public health, and promote sustainable socio-economic development.
“The Ministry is pleased to announce a significant improvement in water quality across Ndola, Luanshya, Masaiti, and Mpongwe Districts, following the commissioning of the Kafulafuta Water Supply System Project by President Hakainde Hichilema on May 9, 2025,” Nzovu said.
He added that since the Kafulafuta Dam became operational, Kafubu Water and Sanitation Company Limited (KWSC) had consistently supplied high-quality, clean, and safe drinking water to its customers.
“The superior quality of raw water, particularly its low turbidity and improved physical parameters, has greatly enhanced treatment efficiency at KWSC’s facilities,” the Minister stated.
Nzovu explained that the exceptional raw water quality from Kafulafuta Dam had eliminated the need for coagulants during water treatment, marking a major step forward in operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
He further noted that prior to the commissioning of the dam, KWSC incurred substantial costs on water treatment chemicals to meet national drinking water standards.
“The new water source has now significantly reduced these expenses while improving both the quality and reliability of water supplied to households and businesses,” he said.
Nzovu revealed that recent depth sampling at Kafulafuta Dam showed turbidity levels below 5 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU), indicating that the raw water was exceptionally pure and comparable to filtered water.
He reaffirmed government’s strong commitment to supporting water utilities in achieving universal access to safe, clean, and reliable water in line with Vision 2030 and Sustainable Development Goal No. 6 on clean water and sanitation for all.
“The Ministry wishes to assure members of the public experiencing intermittent water supply that the situation is temporary, and notable improvements in water availability and reliability will be achieved once the ongoing network expansion works are completed,” Nzovu said.
