The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has formally charged and arrested a Congolese national and a Zambian in two separate operations involving drug-related offences.

DEC Deputy Public Relations Officer, Theresa Mawere, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday, describing the operations as part of the Commission’s intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking.

In the first operation, conducted by officers on the Copperbelt, a Congolese national identified as Dede Ngoi Mujinga Teddy Mumba, aged 55, was arrested in the Masaiti area.

He has been charged with trafficking 60 kilogrammes of compressed cannabis, which was allegedly ferried from the Democratic Republic of Congo and destined for supply within Zambia.

In a separate joint operation in Nchelenge District involving officers from Mansa and Nchelenge in Luapula Province, the Commission also arrested Davies Kayembo, aged 19.

“Kanyembo has been arrested in connection with the offence of trafficking in 51 sachets of cannabis,”Mawere said.

She said both suspects had been detained in lawful custody and were awaiting court appearances.

Mawere further warned members of the public against engaging in drug trafficking, saying such activities damage the country’s image and undermine social and economic development.

“Those found committing such crimes will be arrested and prosecuted effectively,” she said.

She urged citizens to continue reporting suspicious activities to law-enforcement agencies to help create safer communities.
