Zambia, Germany strengthen cooperation on agricultural reforms

Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary–Technical Services, John Mulongoti, has underscored the importance of continued cooperation between Zambia and Germany in implementing reforms in the agriculture sector.

Mulongoti noted that Germany has been supporting Zambia, particularly through reforms in the agriculture sector, where the two countries are implementing a blueprint initiative—the Comprehensive Agriculture Transformation Program—aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity.

According to a statement issued on Monday in Lusaka by Lubinda Kashewe, First Secretary for Press at the Zambian Embassy in Germany, Mulongoti made the remarks on the sidelines of the just-concluded Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA).

He said that engagements with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and other participating countries demonstrated that Zambia is on the right path in promoting mechanisation and improving productivity in the agriculture sector.

“Government is reforming some of its interventions like the Farmer Input Support Program (FISP), where benefits are now being seen,” Mulongoti said.

He explained that Zambia was highlighted as an example for other countries to learn from regarding how to reform and transform the agriculture sector from a potential economic pillar into a real sector that significantly contributes to economic development and job creation.

Mulongoti stressed that the policy and legal reforms undertaken by the government, including the re-purposing of programs like FISP, were now delivering tangible results.

“The Zambian delegation shared the various opportunities which Zambia offers, adding that he was impressed with the number of companies which have expressed interest to invest in the agriculture sector in Zambia,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary expressed confidence that his delegation’s engagements at the Forum had left a strong footprint that would continue yielding results as Zambia advances its agricultural reform agenda.

Zambia was represented at the 18th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) by Mulongoti; his Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation counterpart, Romas Kamanga; and senior officials from both the public and private sectors.
