Sampa in deep trouble as police probe lawmaker’s alleged false claim of ‘ghost polling station’ in Chawama elections

Police in Lusaka have opened a docket for the offence of Transmission of Unsolicited or Deceptive Communication against Patriotic Front Matero lawmaker Miles Sampa, contrary to Section 19 of the Cyber Crimes Act No. 4 of 2025.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and the Republican Progressive Party (RPP) reported Sampa to the police over his claims that a “ghost polling station” was used during the Chawama parliamentary by-election.

RPP National Youth Chairperson, Constantino Mubita, said the party was concerned about statements that had the potential to mislead the public and discredit the Electoral Commission of Zambia following the recently concluded by-election.

In a statement issued in Lusaka, Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said investigations into the matter had since commenced, and that the public would be informed of any significant developments.

“The Zambia Police Service wishes to confirm that it has received a formal complaint against Honourable Miles Sampa,” Chilabi said.

He said the complaint was lodged at Lusaka Central Police Station on January 19, 2026, by Raphael Phiri, aged 53, a Corporate Affairs Officer at the ECZ.

Chilabi stated that Phiri filed the report on behalf of the Electoral Commission.

“The complaint relates to an incident on January 15, 2026, in which Honourable Miles Sampa is alleged to have transmitted information that the Electoral Commission of Zambia maintains is false, stating that a fake polling station had been opened along Ring Road in Lusaka,” he said.
