Two-year old girl drowns as floods reportedly overtake home in Kuku Compound, Lusaka

Police in Lusaka have opened an inquiry into the drowning incident involving a two-year-old girl, Loveness Gwanda, in Kuku Compound, Lusaka.

The incident occurred between 01:00 hours and 02:00 hours on January 26, 2026, and was reported to Misisi Police Post by the child’s mother, Chisala Kalusha, 32, of Kuku Compound, according to Deputy Police Spokesperson Chipo Kaitisha.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that on the night of January 25,2026, the mother left the child with her siblings in the sitting room and went to bed.

“Around 02:00 hours, the mother discovered that rainwater had flooded the sitting room, submerging the sofas, and that the child had drowned,” Kaitisha said in a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday.

She said the matter was reported to the police, who visited and processed the scene.

Kaitisha stated that the child was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

“The body is currently at the UTH Mortuary, pending postmortem examination and burial.An inquiry has been opened to determine the full circumstances of the incident,” she said.

Meanwhile, Police have also instituted investigations to establish the cause of a serious injury road traffic accident which occurred around 15:20 hours along Munali Road near Zambia National Service Chamba Valley in Lusaka on Sunday.

Kaitisha said the accident involved a lone motor vehicle, a Toyota Mark X bearing registration number CAH 9967, which was being driven from north to south.

She said the driver has been identified as David Sakala, aged 29, of Mutumbi Area.

“As a result of the impact, the driver sustained fractures to both legs, neck pains, a cut to the right eye, and general body pains. The motor vehicle was extensively damaged,” she said.

Kaitisha stated that the driver was currently admitted to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment.

“The motor vehicle has since been parked at Bennie Mwiinga Police Traffic pending examination by the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA),” she said.
