PSG and Newcastle play out 1–1 draw, drop into Champions League play-offs

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Newcastle United played out a 1–1 draw at the Parc des Princes in their final UEFA Champions League league phase match on Wednesday night.

The results left both clubs outside the top eight and heading into the Champions League play-off round.

PSG took an early lead in the 8th minute when Vitinha fired into the bottom corner after Newcastle failed to close him down, giving the Ligue 1 champions an early advantage in Paris.

Newcastle responded just before halftime, with Joe Willock rising to head home in the 45+2nd minute, cancelling out the opener and giving Eddie Howe’s side a boost at the break.

In a match reported by SkySports, hosts dominated possession throughout much of the contest and had the ball in the net from Ousmane Dembélé’s penalty, but the effort was saved by goalkeeper Nick Pope, keeping the score level.

Both sides pushed for a winner in the second half as they sought to secure automatic qualification to the Champions League Round of 16, but neither could find the decisive goal despite late chances at both ends.

The draw leaves PSG and Newcastle on equal points in the group standings but just outside the top eight, meaning neither secured direct entry to the knockouts. Instead both will compete in the play-off round to reach the last 16.
