The Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) has confirmed that the Lukulu River in Kasama District has burst its banks, disrupting access to vital infrastructure and affecting local communities.

In a statement released on Sunday, WARMA reported that Mponda and Kalyalya villages have been hardest hit, with floodwaters cutting off the bridge leading to St. Fidelis Mission Hospital, the only healthcare facility serving the area.

“The Lukulu River has overflowed, impacting Mponda and Kalyalya villages. Critical access routes, including the bridge to St. Fidelis Mission Hospital, are currently impassable,” WARMA said.

The bridge is also used by pupils attending St. Theresa Girls School, temporarily halting movement to both the hospital and the school.

WARMA confirmed that its officers were on site, working alongside the Zambia Red Cross Society and the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to coordinate response efforts.

“WARMA officers are collaborating with the Red Cross and DMMU to support emergency response, including community awareness, preparedness messaging, and mitigation measures to protect lives and property,” the Authority added.

Meanwhile, WARMA has warned that flood risks remained for other areas of Northern Province.

In Chinsali District, the Lubu River is forecast to reach flood levels around 20 February, potentially affecting communities near Lubwa Mission, including Mbao, Kalwela, and Mweye villages.

“In Chinsali District, the Lubu River is expected to reach flood levels around 20 February, affecting communities near Lubwa Mission,” WARMA stated.

The Chambeshi River in Kanchibiya District is also projected to flood around 28 February, threatening villages near the Mpika–Kasama Road Bridge. Residents in these areas are urged to take precautionary measures early.

“Residents in all affected and high-risk areas should remain vigilant, avoid crossing flooded points, safeguard property, and move to higher ground where necessary,” WARMA advised.
