The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is supporting the feeding of 4,114 learners under the Home-Grown School Meals Programme in selected schools in Kabwe.

This is being done in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders.

According to a statement issued on Monday, the beneficiary institutions include Neemtree Primary School with 709 learners, Mtshede Primary School with 1,471 learners and Makwati Community Primary School with 364 learners.

At secondary level, 463 learners at Gombe Secondary School and 1,107 at Makululu Day Secondary School are benefiting from the initiative.

Principal Fisheries and Livestock Nutrition Officer, Bwalya Tembo, said the programme, which covered both primary and secondary schools, was enhancing the nutritional value of maize, beans and soya-based meals through the inclusion of animal-sourced foods such as eggs, milk and fish.

“The addition of high-quality animal protein is part of Government efforts to address malnutrition, improve learning outcomes, and strengthen sustainable market linkages for local small-scale farmers,” she added.

Tembo argued that the predictable demand created by the programme enabled farmers to supply milk, eggs and fish consistently, thereby boosting production, increasing incomes, and enhancing food security.

She further stated that the school feeding initiative formed part of broader Government policy reforms aligned with President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision to improve access to education, create a conducive learning environment, and enhance academic performance nationwide.
