Firefighters from Mpika Town Council Fire Brigade have rescued a newborn baby boy who was found abandoned in a pit latrine in Shanghai Township, officials said on Wednesday.

According to Council Public Relations Officer Mushota Mpundu, the fire brigade received a distress call from community members at around 10:16 hours, reporting that a baby had been dumped.

A technical rescue crew led by Sub Officer Nebert Kasonda was dispatched to the scene to undertake the confined-space rescue operation.

Upon arrival, the team conducted a rapid risk assessment and deployed what Mpundu described as the most effective rescue technique for the situation.

“The brave female firefighter, Felistus Banda, entered the pit latrine and successfully extricated a live newborn baby boy,” Mpundu said.

The baby was immediately rushed to TAZARA Clinic for urgent medical attention.

Divisional Fire Officer Reuben Mukonde commended the team for its professionalism, courage and swift response, saying their actions saved the child’s life.

He urged members of the public to report emergencies promptly, stressing that timely alerts significantly improved the chances of successful rescue operations.

Mpundu said relevant authorities had launched investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment and identify the person responsible.

“Those found culpable will be dealt with according to the law. Mpika Town Council strongly condemns acts that endanger the lives of innocent children and encourages the public to seek lawful and humane support systems in times of social or personal difficulties,” he said.

He added that the Council remained committed to protecting life, property and the environment through effective fire prevention, firefighting and rescue services.
