Zambia eyes US$20m climate finance as nation prepares to host global Loss and Damage Fund meeting

Green Economy and Environment Minister, Mike Mposha, says Zambia is set to access up to US$20 million under the Barbados Implementation Modalities Window to help address climate-related losses and damages.

Speaking during a media briefing at Urban Hotel in Lusaka on Friday, Mposha said the country was in the final stages of preparing a project proposal for submission to the 8th Board meeting of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage.

He announced that Zambia would become the first African country to host the Board meeting, scheduled for April in Livingstone.

“The Fund, established at COP-22 in 2022, supports developing countries that are most vulnerable to climate change impacts. Zambia is already experiencing severe climate shocks, making access to this fund critical for our adaptation and resilience-building efforts,” Mposha said.

He described the hosting of the high-level gathering as a matter of national pride and an affirmation of Zambia’s strengthening role in global climate governance.

“Hosting this Board meeting positions our country to engage more strategically with emerging climate-finance opportunities while bringing global attention to Zambia’s climate vulnerabilities,” he said.

According to the minister, government has set up a multi-disciplinary local organising committee composed of key ministries, state agencies, and international partners to oversee logistics, administration and technical preparations for the event.

Mposha said the preparations also included developing a “strong and competitive” funding proposal, with support from cooperating partners led by GIZ.

“This is an important opportunity for Zambia. Even as we host the 8th Board meeting, we are actively preparing to benefit from resources available to climate-vulnerable developing countries,” he said.

He added that the event would help raise national awareness on the significance of loss and damage financing, which is increasingly vital as Zambia continues to face prolonged droughts, floods and other climate-induced challenges.

“We see this Board meeting as an opportunity to showcase Zambia’s leadership, hospitality and commitment to global climate action,” Mposha said.

He assured the public that all necessary arrangements were being finalised for a successful and well-organised international event in Livingstone, and said Zambia looked forward to welcoming delegates from across the world.
