Alleged mastermind of killing of woman accused of witchcraft in Kalumbila arrested

Police in Kalumbila District have apprehended 17 people — including the alleged mastermind — in connection with the killing of a woman accused of practicing witchcraft.

Police Spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, said three of the suspects were female and all remain in custody as investigations continue.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, Chilabi said eight suspects were initially arrested after the attack, which resulted in the death of Eneless Kamutumbe.

He said the case was first reported by Mwalede Siamuchimba, 39, of Solwezi, who informed police of the fatal assault on his cousin.

Chilabi said police would continue arresting all individuals found to have participated in the crime as part of efforts to ensure accountability and curb mob justice.

“To enhance security, Police Command has deployed additional officers from the School of Public Order Maintenance (Mobile Unit) based in Kamfinsa, Kitwe,” he said, referring to deployments from Kamfinsa and Kitwe.

He said officers were conducting increased patrols in Kalumbila and surrounding areas.

Chilabi condemned the mob action, including the destruction of government property during the incident.

“Members of the public are urged to remain calm and report any suspected criminal activity to the police, rather than taking the law into their own hands,” he said.

He also expressed concern over the circulation of graphic video footage related to the killing, warning that such material could cause further trauma to the bereaved family and distress the public.

Chilabi urged people to stop sharing the content and to respect the dignity of the deceased and her family.

“Members of the public with any information related to this case are encouraged to contact the police,” he said.

He assured that all information would be handled confidentially in line with police procedures and that updates would be provided as investigations progress.
