President Hichilema makes major judicial, electoral appointments (See list)

State House says President Hakainde Hichilema has made a series of judicial appointments in accordance with Article 140(e) of the Constitution of Zambia.

State House Chief Communications Specialist, Clayson Hamasaka, said President Hichilema had appointed Chalwe Mchenga, Justice Abha Patel, Justice Getrude Chawatama, and Butler Sitali as Judges of the Supreme Court.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, Hamasaka said the President’s decision was made acting on the recommendation of the Judicial Service Commission and was subject to ratification by the National Assembly.

He added that President Hichilema had further appointed Justice Pixie Yangailo, Justice Vincent Siloka, and Getrude Imbwae as Judges of the Constitutional Court, also subject to ratification by the National Assembly.

Additionally, Justice Charles Zulu has been appointed Deputy President of the Court of Appeal.

The President has also appointed Justice Sharon Kaunda Newa, Justice Irene Zeko Mbewe, Justice Bridget Chilombo Maka, Justice Ruth Chibbabuka, Justice Concepter Zulu, and Justice Susan Wanjelani as Judges of the Court of Appeal.

“This is subject to parliamentary ratification,” Hamasaka said.

Hichilema has also appointed several individuals as Judges of the High Court for Zambia, including Rodgers Kaoma, Ikechukwu Iduma, and Makalo Sosoo Mwaanza, among others, subject to ratification by the National Assembly.

Other appointees to the High Court are Davis Chibwili, Sylvia Munyinya Okoh, Katrina Walubita, Mutafela Chimuka, Ireen Wishimanga, Claudia Luswili, Kaumbi Mundia, Thelma Mumba, Maureen Tresha, Angelica Mwanza, Japhet Zulu, Diana Majokwe, and Comfort Mulenga.

Also included are Sombo Kachaka, Sekelebaka Kundachola, Peter Chileshe, Bubala Chibbonta, Anne Nsama, Ruth Mbambi, Kalifano Manyepa, McRobby Chiwale, Kabukabu Sikwibele, and James Chipola.

“In accordance with Section 5(1) of the Electoral Commission of Zambia Act No. 25 of 2016, the President has appointed Major General Vincent Mukanda (Rtd) as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Zambia,” Hamasaka said.

He added that Zevyanji Sinkala had been appointed as ECZ Commissioner, with both appointments subject to ratification by the National Assembly.
