Authorities in Northern Province have reportedly registered more than 270 motorbikes in an effort to regularise bikers operations and reduce ever increasing road mishaps .

Motorcycles have lately proved difficult to manage as a day hardly passed without a fatal motorbike accident.

Northern Province Deputy Commanding Officer,
Charles Mbita, said in a statement on Tuesday that following successful launch of the Road Safety Campaign and Motor Bike Registration Exercise held on April 30, 2026 in Kasama District, the province had recorded an overwhelming response from motor bike owners and riders towards the ongoing registration and compliance exercise.

The exercise is being implemented through a coordinated multi-agency approach involving the Zambia Police Service, INTERPOL, the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA), and the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).

He said the initiative was aimed at enhancing road safety, strengthening security, promoting accountability among motor bike operators, and ensuring that all motor bikes operating within the province comply with the laws of Zambia.

Between May 5 and May 9, 2026, Mbita said INTERPOL successfully conducted motor bike clearance in five districts of Northern Province.
“During the exercise in Kaputa District 62 motor bikes, Nsumbu area 36 motor bikes,Nsama District four motor bikes , Mporokoso District 127 motor bike while Lunte District registered 49 motor bikes respectively,” he said.

This brings the total number of motor bikes cleared during the period under review to 278.

Consequently, he revealed that the cumulative provincial total of motor bikes cleared by INTERPOL now stood at 768, pending further clearance and processing by ZRA and RTSA.

Further, a total of 680 riders have so far been licensed, while 535 motor bikes have successfully been registered out of an estimated 2,000 motor bikes operating within the province, according to Mbita.

“The Zambia Police Service is greatly encouraged by the cooperation and commitment demonstrated by members of the public towards this important exercise,” Mbita stated.

“The positive response being recorded is largely attributed to the implementation framework and operational concept developed by Northern Division to facilitate effective motor bike registration and compliance.”

He claimed that the progress made so far positions Northern Province as a potential model for the implementation of similar initiatives in other provinces experiencing an influx of unregistered motor bikes, including Eastern, Muchinga, Luapula, and North-Western Provinces respectively.

He encouraged members of the public to continue participating in the ongoing exercise to avoid inconveniences and contribute to improved road safety, crime prevention, and enhanced public security.
