Two bodies retrieved from scene of fatal train accident in Ndola

Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) has announced the recovery of two bodies during an operation at the Bwana Mkubwa train derailment site in Ndola involving locomotive and coal-loaded wagons.

The accident occurred on 15 May 2026, between Bwana Mkubwa and Ndola Railway Station, near Itawa Bridge, when the train experienced a runaway movement and subsequently derailed.

The railway company confirmed in a statement on Sunday that that the recovered bodies had been handed over to the relevant authorities for identification and further processes in line with established procedures.

Search and recovery operations had been ongoing since the incident, with support from the Fire Brigade, Zambia Police, and other partner agencies.

“ZRL also deployed additional lifting equipment, including a ZNS excavator, to assist in the recovery efforts,” it stated.
